Torch Browser is an alternative web browser that integrates social features, video and audio downloading via streaming and a BitTorrent client.

Based on Google Chrome –or rather, on its open-source browser project Chromium–, you'll like Torch Browser because it combines the advantages of Chrome with its own improvements.

A pimped-out Chrome

Torch Browser is definitely an improvement compared to Google Chrome as it adds new features that you would otherwise have to add as extensions.

First, Torch Browser has a client to download Torrent files. On a separate tab, you can add a Torrent via URL or file and see how it downloads.

Torch Browser also allows downloading video and audio via streaming. It's simple and, although it doesn’t let you choose the quality and format, it’s useful if you want to store these files and convert them later.

On the other hand, with Torch Browser you can share the page you are viewing by clicking the Share button, compatible with Twitter and book.

Other interesting features are the option to share the name of songs and groups that you are listening through Torch Music, and the options to search something on Google, Wikipedia or YouTube by selecting a word or phrase and dragging it to the right side of Torch Browser.

Chrome on the outside, Torch on the inside

Torch Browser should offer the same quality as Google Chrome, such as speed and low resource consumption. However, since it includes its own functions, the performance of Torch is slowed down, especially when using the BitTorrent feature regardless of your Internet connection.

When you open Torch Browser you think you're using Google Chrome. Indeed, it’s very similar, but the added features and functions make Torch different: some are subtle as the search function while others can be accessed from the address toolbar, such as the Share, Media and Torrent buttons.

Improving Chrome

Is Torch Browser a good alternative to Google Chrome? The answer is yes. There is still a long way to go, like improving the resource consumption of the BitTorrent client and the media download function but, for now, Torch Browser works well and offers the same advantages as Chrome, plus some interesting additions.

You can then just click on their name to call them for free - regardless of where in the world they are, or even what phone they are using. If a contact does not have Viber installed, you can still ring them through the app, although you will get charged at the cost of a regular call.

The Viber interface is very clearly laid, making it very obvious how to use the app. The program could do with some more features, though, such as conference calling and video calling.

Viber features push notifications to ensure that you don't miss messages or activity.

The quality of calls with Viber is generally very good, and rivals Skype in this respect - although of course, quality isn't usually as crisp as a cellular call. One side of Viber is that it doesn't give you the option to make video calls like you can with Skype.

What's new in Viber 4.0

Viber 4.0 adds a new 'Hold & Talk' feature, allowing you to send instant voice messages in real time. This is a feature that was popularized by apps like Voxer and Zello, and which is also built into WhatsApp. It's fun to play with and adds a new dimension to your chats.

Also added in the test major update to Viber is support for up-to 100 participants in group chats (though obviously having this maximum could get messy), the ability to choose conversation backgrounds from the background gallery, and more than 1,000 new Viber stickers from the sticker market.

The verdict

Aside from the fact that you can't make video calls with Viber, it's just about the perfect chat app for your mobile. It looks fantastic, makes it easy to chat with friends for free and is a lot of fun to use!

It's also now possible to customize your privacy options to choose what kind of data you want to share with the sites you visit. 

Security also seems to have been refined by Microsoft, and Internet Explorer 9 now offers us new tools such as protection against tracking and SmartScreen Filter (which allows you to check the security certificate of the sites you visit to avoid undesirable pages).

Customize your web browsing experience

Internet Explorer 9 is an opportunity for Microsoft to (finally) incorporate a system of tabs in the browser. It's no longer necessary to open a new window for each different page you visit, and believe us, this new feature really is a breath of fresh air for Internet Explorer. It's a shame, however, that this innovation has taken so long (much longer than it took the competition) to be introduced!

However, it's the browser that offers some of the most interesting options. It's possible to customize the language options to choose which versions to play for sites. Convenient if you're traveling abroad or you always want to display web pages in a language other than that of your browser. You can also change the search engine options to choose your favorite, and you don't necessarily need to use Bing as the base.

In terms of extensions, Internet Explorer 9 is also catching up and now offers more additional plug-ins to customize your browser. However, don't expect a plethora of extensions, Internet Explorer always blames its delay on other browsers like Firefox! However, the new performance center for extensions offers a helpful option for reviewing resource consumption, so you can quickly identify extensions that are likely to slow down your browsing experience.

A browser that's constantly improving...but still has far to go

There's no doubt that Microsoft has radically revised its copy for Internet Explorer 9, with new (and welcome) options on privacy, security and extensions. Special mention must go to the performance center for extensions, which is definitely a one-up on its competitors. 

But despite efforts by the developer, Internet Explorer 9 is still too far behind its main competitors. Nowhere near as fast as Chrome, as versatile as Firefox or as lightweight as Opera, Microsoft's browser is too light on extensions and too heavy to get up any real speed. Internet Explorer 9 is a decent browser, but nowhere near the top of the genre.
